Are you a Grasshopper or an Ant ?

Post by arctictom »

Do you have some food storage , bug out bag, extra ammo ?
I am curious how many of us are set up to be self sufficient (I suspect a majority) or would be/will be self sufficient in short order, (probably the remainder).

My wife thinks I am excessive , although when ever she needs some thing from the store 90 percent of the time I can just get it from my storage bins.

We rotate our SHTF food stocks into our everyday supply, so shelf lives are kept reasonable.

Which reminds me that we are running short on tinned tomatos. I am not going to be able to face down an invasion of socialist UN zombies without home made pasta sauce :D

Self reliant is a habit for us now. It didn't originally come from fearing the end times or anything like that, just mundane crap like living somewhere that was really prone to power outages, bad weather and where things just generally never seemed to work out as planned.

Getting the horses required an extra layer of preparedness - they don't care if there is a fuel shortage due to tax protests, or half the countryside has been shut down due to a badly managed epidemic of foot and mouth disease ( both of which happened in recent years ) or even if it's just snowing like it is now - if they don't get feed and water they'll die. So there has to be a Plan B.
And then there is vetinary care, it's really expensive so it makes sense to learn to cope with some aspects yourself just to save money. Which crosses over into human medicine on certain basic levels. A lot of the supplies you need are the same.

Same here. I tried selecting options 2 and 3. My food storage program leaves a bit to be desired. I need to get my spare propane tank refilled, and should also probably give up on selling the spare fridge and just put it in the garage for extra cold storage. Generator and ammo are covered, (ammo at least marginally, I'd rather have a good bit more), but I could also probably do with an emergency window AC unit given the temps here in the summer. Food issues should probably be addressed sooner rather than later the way things have been going...

Wouldn't let me submit the form either, NPR.

Sta-bil is your friend. Available at most hardware stores, auto part stores, and Wally World.
I don't buy cans of gasoline without adding it. I'll even add it to the ZR-7's and the Majesty's tanks in the winter, since they only get ridden on nice days then.

For home/camp: Big Berkey

For travel or bugout bag: Katadyn Hiker

NOTE: There's a cheaper way to filter medium/large quantaties of water than buying a Big Berkey. Simply buy a couple of the Super Sterasyl filter elements, a couple of 5 gal plastic buckets with the lids, and a plastic spigot. You can assemble an excellent home water filter for about 1/3 the cost of the Big Berkey, and it will actually hold more water.
