The government agrees: I'm a big ol' ham

Post by Cybrludite »

I passed the test today for my Technician-class amateur radio license. Didn't do quite well enough on the General, but then I hadn't been studying for it. By Wednesday evening, I should know my call-sign.

Haven't talked on that in a while.

:(

I need to get a set installed in the Jeep since you can use that, but not a cell phone.

Very uncouth with the amateur crowd.
When I was in ham radio it seemed most of the contacts were a querry as to the signal strenght and readability, my location and send me a qsl.

Congratulations. If you give it a chance it will grow on you and can be just as costly as collecting firearms.

Depends on what aspect of the hobby you're pursuing. What you describe is about right for the contesters and "wall paper" collectors on HF.

Then there's folks that get together on regularly scheduled Nets (HF and VHF and up) to generally BS and shoot the breeze. No "exchanges"

My personal niche is emergency and disaster communications. Mostly VHF with some HF. A couple of weekly nets I check in to, plus drills, exercises and public service events several times a year.

With all my local family members licensed, it's also a handy intercom when out and about in our vehicles, or at events such as fairs, shopping in large malls, etc.

Amateur radio is like shooting in another way other than being able to spend large amounts of money on toys; there are several aspects and lines of interest you can pursue, and you may never get around to doing all of them, and you will probably only master a few. But you will never run out of new things to try.
