Job Interview - Done. Update posted

Post by tfbncc »

Well, I finally got called and told when the interview would be. Tomorrow afternoon. I'm as ready as I'm going to be. I've been going over all the work I've done previously in my head recalling what worked, what didn't. I'm confident that I won't mess up. The only aspect I can't control is whether I'll outshine the competition. If I don't get the job, it won't be for lack of trying.

I would like to express a very heartfelt "thank you" for everyone here on the board that helped me.

Remember to try and relax, and don't forget to BREATHE. Listen to what they have to say and their questions and don't rush - get there with time to spare and greet everyone you meet because you don't know if the same person you bumped into on the elevator is one of the people doing the interview.

If you're a coffee drinker, take it a little easy (but not so easy you give yourself a caffeine headache) until AFTER the interview.

Refresh yourself over the tips provided and BE YOURSELF.

As long as they don't have some other agenda, I'm confident you'll get the job.

We're pulling for you!!

The hardest thing - and the most important - is to RELAX.

Yes, remember you are also interviewing them.

Figure out some questions to ask them. Details about the position. Job responsibilities not spelled out. Positive questions obviously, but ones that show you are already taking ownership of the position.

And yes, relax. You do your best and they make the decision. You have done what you can, now go make a good impression.

Pulling for you.

And don't forget to brush your teeth, gargle with mouthwash, and shine your shoes. You would not believe the number of job applicants who forget the basics.

Well, I'm back from the interview. It was quite interesting. It was a panel of 4 people, 1 man and 3 women. Started with the great catch all question "Why do you want this job?". What do you say? I need this job to pay bills, why else does anyone apply for a job. What I actually said was that from my experience in the Navy, it was driven into our heads that you always train yourself, train your people, and train the people that will follow you. I like teaching, I get a lot of satisfaction out of seeing people learn what I know. I'm also looking for a career that will get me involved with the outside world again since my kids are reaching the age when they will leave home soon. So then they asked just what I taught in the military. Hmmm, how do you explain about underwater sound propogation, Soviet submarine electrical and propulsion design and technology, tactics, inflight safety, military bearing and behavior, etc. But I tried. The one gentleman asked most of the technical questions about computers. They use Microsoft Excel to keep their database of instructors and student assignments. I questioned this later when they let me ask questions. But the one question he asked, I didn't know the answer to, so I told the truth. I haven't used Excel in a couple of years, and I can't recall that operation. He smiled and said, fair enough. I didn't try to bluff my way through any of the questions. There was one, though, that I did stumble on. They asked me "If a student came in to apply for an assignment with an instructor, but was way down the waiting list, how do you help them. Sheesh, without knowing how they prioritize assignments, how many instructors they have, any rules for limits on number of students, etc, I couldn't come up with a definitive answer, but I think I winged it pretty good. That was the only problem I had. I think I impressed them quite enough that I have a fair shot of getting this job.

Sounds like you hit a home run. There's almost ALWAYS one question there that throws you for a loop. You might have said (20 20 hindsight), "I don't know how you make decisions on this but I'd try to direct the student toward someone else who might better know what to do." or something along those lines. Success to you.
