That's really not driving distance from NYFC/NJ, otherwise he might as well exclude Utah too. :D

I'd reccommend Florida, except that pretty much everyone else also is moving down here.

If you want to try small town living I suggest Parkersburg WV, Marietta Oh. area. Many chem/industrial plants in the area, including DuPont. The US Bureau of the Public Debt is in Parkersburg too. Non of the big town traffic problems or with crime either it seems. About two hours from Columbus, a bit closer to Charleston if you need your big city fix. Cabela's is about two hours to Wheeling, Myrtle Beach and Ocean CIty are maybe about eight or ten hours away. YOu can fish in the Ohio river or go up above Marietta to fish on the Muskingum. The weather is probably similar to what you have there. We have maybe six-ten weeks of "winter" weather. I know, we are democrat controlled but this area will send a Republican to the legislature and all the dems will proclaim that they are a live-time member of the NRA, even if they just bought that membership yesterday.

How to folks down in North or South Carolina and Kentucky feel about transplanted Yankees? I promise not to try to turn the place into NYC/NJ, and I'll probably pick up a Southern accent too.

I'd forgotten about Lexington. When we moved down from Alaska, we had a list of things we wanted in a city:

1. On an interstate (makes travel easeir and prices lower),
2. With a zoo (just to piss off PETA),
3. 100k-150k population (big enough to have stuff, but not too big),
4. 2-3 hours drive from a big city (for when you want more),
5. With a university (makes life more culturally interesting),
6. USDA Hardiness Zone 5 (not too hot, not too cold).

Lexington was one of three in the US that met all that. I've heard lots of good things about it.
Note to self: start reading sig lines. They're actually quite amusing. :D

A) Do not be the damn yankee w. the fake southern accent... The only thing worse is the "Earp" w. a Brooklyn accent, 24/7 in a felt hat (doesn't understand enough when to switch to straw), boots, a buckle, and all denim.

B) You're a damn yankee. Accept it. Politically, you'll be more accepted in SC than in Rural TX (SC is surprisingly Socialist, in a "we want the GOBs to run everything".) Oh, and unless you're a very rare person from the Northeast, TX/Western Conservatives will think you're a Socialist, but those tendencies disappear quickly. Culturally, eh... in SC, either you went to the Citadel, or you didn't, but, frankly, the natives are losing importance as SC fills up w. conservatives fleeing the Northeast. I really doubt you'll like the majority of the locals. I realize this sounds bad, but there seems to be a very narrow section of SC society that's decent. There are some lovely places, w. lovely people, inland, esp. in the more Agricultural areas, and Charleston is a great town to party in -- kinda an upscale NO.

C) In business, SCers tend to be slimeballs. They'll lie, cheat, steal, etc, and are generally revolting -- you could very well end up having to pay "bribes" AKA "charitable contributions." The Western States, and TX aren't this way nearly as much -- actually, the best business ethics tends to pretty much be the Northeast* -- lying takes too much time for a NYC businessman to mess with.

*Well, Central PA is the best place for me, but my family's PA Dutch, I don't know how they deal w. outsiders.

D) I don't know what your race is, don't care, really, but if your black, I really suggest avoiding SC -- there's a level of racism there that is unnerving as a white man, I imagine it would be very disturbing to a black man.

Aglifter,
Sorry if I was unclear, it wouldn't be a fake accent, I just tend to pick up speech patterns from people around me. I spent a week in Maine and my wife teased me about saying "Ayuh".

I'm white (technically I'm 1/4 Asian too, but you really have to know what to look for to see it in me), but racists disgust me. The first slimeball who started that crap with me would learn that.
