Well, there's enough scholarly work out there showing a bunch of mystery cults were around during Jesus' time. Basically they all told of a god-man born of a virgin, does a bunch of miracles in life, dies and is reborn. Mithras, Osiris, Orpheus, Herakles, Jesus. Some would say the early church based around Jesus was just the one of mystery cults of the time, but given a Jewish slant. From reading Paul's various letters, you could tell early Christianity was heading into various directions, including Jewish mystery cult, Gnosticism, and various other things labeled as heresy these days. Make of that what you will.
One of the guys who hung out with the Pagans I knew was a Gnostic Christian, actively trying to start a pre-Nicean Council church. Outside of my religious studies professors in college, he was one of the most knowledgeable guys I knew on the subject of Christianity, and even being a Gnostic he had great respect for the Orthodox Christian tradition and liturgy.

wrong again... they believe that music isnt needed other than the human voice...Denis wrote:Of course not, they worship the low brass, like any right-thinking person would doRod wrote:Do they pray to the string or wind section?
they also believe that the preacher will be inspired by the lord during his sermon and thus do not prepare a sermon ahead of time... that can result in sermons that last 30 minutes and sometimes sermons that last 3 hours...

This friend of mine has a gay uncle and his male partner.I've had several gay friends and 1 uncle.
She calls them "the Guncles."

I can recall a few 30-minute ones that felt like 3 hours, myself... My own position is that if it takes the preacher longer to deliver the sermon than it did to read from the good book, he's got his timing way wrong.mekender wrote:... they ... do not prepare a sermon ahead of time... that can result in sermons that last 30 minutes and sometimes sermons that last 3 hours...

In my case, it's my baby sister. She's thinking about getting married, and having a child. Do I approve? No. Do I love my sister? Yes.
