Two things... Most Band Camp stories are TRUE,Denis wrote:Ah, the happy memories... I had a certain weakness for flautists, even before Alyson Hannigan.Dedicated_Dad wrote:Sorry - I just can't resist...

Alright!
All together now!
"This one time...??"
"...At band camp??..."

and...
Saying "This one time, at band camp..." in the presence of a flute player, is likely to end in pain. And not the fun kind.

"band camp"
Didn't mean to cause any offense - I was in the band for 12 straight years - started in 1st grade myself!!

Oh, no, sir, none taken. Just know to duck if you say that to a flute player. I loved being in the band, and the stories are great for drunken reminiscing.Dedicated_Dad wrote:Didn't mean to cause any offense - I was in the band for 12 straight years - started in 1st grade myself!!

Re: "band camp"
My kids' HS band is considered the lowest possible rung in the social-order ladder. There was more "partying" on my HS band trips than any other extracurricular crew - even the football trips were boring compared to the band busses...Lokidude wrote:Dedicated_Dad wrote:... Ahhh, he good ol days...!!
Oh, and I too have a number of very happy memories of flautists...
Did I mention G*d gave me 2 daughters because of some really horrendous karmic-debt?? I was actually sort of glad when my flute-playing daughter decided to drop band after 8th grade...

HS band is not as popular as it once was. One local school is dropping it and the others seem to have more flags than players. My old school used to have around maybe 60-70 members with four majorettes and a drum major. Now the membership has about 40, but only half, or even less are playing.

Our local middle-school has a HUGE and highly-successful band program. These kids take first-prize in every parade, it's not even generally celebrated any more because it's just expected.Fivetoes wrote:HS band is not as popular as it once was. 99% of them will quit before high school, and every one of them says it's because the HS band is so small... I tried for several years to convince a bunch of them to stay with it - after all, if just one class stayed in, the band would be much larger and then the NEXT bunch would have a reason to stay...
Wasted effort, and even when my 2 quit they still said "the HS band is too small..."
There really is a "breaking point."
Meanwhile, a dozen other schools within 60 miles still have healthy band programs including my old HS. It's not as big as it was 25 years ago, but still over 100...

EDIT: Anybody see the South Park episode about "guitar hero"? Too much truth in that one - the Dad sees them playing G.H. and says "I'll teach you how to play a REAL guitar!!" then proceeds to really rock out. The kids - totally stunned - finally find their voices and say "that's ghey."
Too much truth to that. Why bother to learn a REAL instrument when so much can be done easily with electronics - when the Wii can damn near "play" any instrument imaginable.??
Hard as it is for me to say, some of these kids are doing some amazing things - check out "guitar zeros" http://www.metacafe.com/watch/542607/th ... ull_video/ or http://theguitarzeros.com/
Thing is, these guys actually know how to really play real guitars, and created most of the software and midi samples they're controlling with the plastic -- they're just capitalizing on the gimmick here.
Sadly though, fewer and fewer will learn to play for real, thus also won't have the talent and skills to do something like this...
Of course "music" is now comprised of grunting vulgar doggerel over drum-machine beats...
/get off my lawn, G*d-@mn kids...

Re: What instruments do ya'll play
I played euphonium/bass baritone from elementary school until the end of college. I was good enough to be district material in high school on the euphonium. I also played the piano from about first grade until tenth. Definitely not a pro.
I sang in high school, in all the groups that my school offered and was good enough to get into county chorus. I was just okay, but the select groups my school had were the best in the state. We were just a small podunk, cow-milking, manure shoveling, deer-hunting school, but our concert chorale was better than the best private school could offer, thanks to our music teacher.
Now I'm pretty much restricted to the harmonica, and never really think about going back to anything else. Harmonicas are nice because they're small and you can play a variety of songs on a single harp.

Me too. I can plink around on a piano but will not do so in front of people. It is very bad.Jered wrote:I sing in the church choir.
I play a mean tamborine

I went to school on a vocal music scholarship. Hmm, I'm a classically trained first soprano soloist that carries a gun. That should be a frightening thought.
