Thank you for keeping us updated. Know it cannot be easy putting this out in the public.
Very thankful that things seems to be looking up. Prayers for continued good news, and for your wife to get better.

From personal experience, I can tell you, never utter the phrase, "It's so clear! How can this not make sense?"Precision wrote:We are also going to tackle her biggest learning foe, math. I am going to be teaching her Algebra. That should force that brain of hers to work and expand.

This is so great. You just joined the pantheon of my personal heroes. Seriously. You, personally, saved her life by calling BS on the original doctors. Keep fighting. So we are quite happy. Next month, they are likely to nuke the lung cancer. Then all know cancer will be gone. No telling how long that will last, but we are very hopeful to put that original 6-18 month diagnosis DIRECTLY in the trashcan.
Note to self: start reading sig lines. They're actually quite amusing. :D

well thank you, but WE called bullshit on her original death sentence. For different reasons, but we both knew that was bullshit. Sometimes it is a curse to have two people in a marriage that exceed mensa standards. This was not one of those times. I think her doctors now realize that we BOTH out horsepower them. When we are motivated we can process a big data load of internet research. and get a big degree of understanding and poke HUGE holes in their "we are the pro's" attitude.Weetabix wrote:From personal experience, I can tell you, never utter the phrase, "It's so clear! They are very educated in their niches. We took a crash course in the multi-discipline aspect needed to grasp the concept and figure out a path to wellness. Working at the cancer center gave Dawn (and thus us) a huge head start. The doctor at Florida Hospital was very taken a back when I asked him about the specifics of his machines and was able to hold him to the fire on how the xray interaction with flesh differed from gamma ray interaction with human flesh. Correcting his broad generalizations / being an equal might have been why they refused to treat her.

I'll take your word for it. If I ever meet her, she can join you.Precision wrote:well thank you, but WE called bullshit on her original death sentence. For different reasons, but we both knew that was bullshit.

The 28th of this month will be 5 year since my mother was taken by the same cancer... For me this whole thing is very emotional.
Both you and Dawn are very dear to me and I truly hope with everything I have that this path leads in a great direction for you two.
But on the other hand, I cannot help but wonder what if... What if my dad and I had the presence of mind and awareness you have... To refuse to take the answers that were given and go after others... I can only take a bit of comfort with the thought that perhaps one of the many doctors that were involved in my moms years of treatment managed to learn something along the way and that has led to where you are now.
Forgive me for being a bit glum, but this whole thing has been on my mind heavily for the past few weeks... Both good and bad.

Dawn and I have a few advantages over many people in this area. She has a clinical background, as a lab tech; but it still gives her a base of knowledge to draw from. I have a vicarious base of knowledge in that my mother was a nurse for 40 years, so I know way more about medicine, doctors, their egotistical BS and the like then the average guy. Also, since both of us exceed Mensa standards and we are very motivated, the Doctors have REALLY had to justify things for us as the internet is a HUGE source of information and we have self educated, quickly. That is a resource that didn't exist (at least the way it does now) 5 years ago.
Also since she works at a cancer center now, she has access to the doctors on a personal level. Their emotions are entwined in her situation which helps us to leverage past their egos. We have no idea if any of this will increase her lifespan, but it does provide us hope and has gotten us to a set of doctors who are competent and confident that they can beat this back for many years, perhaps 10 or more.
You did what you knew to do. The situation 5 years ago was not the situation that exists today. I am sure you and your father did what you could and so did the doctors. Unfortunately, it did not have a better result. There is no certainty that our actions will provide the result we are hoping for. I think we have a good shot. But Dawn was very glum all day yesterday and she had the surgery from the best of the best. In the end, you do what you think is best and see what that roll of the dice brings.
We may roll snake eyes. We may roll a called "8" the hard way. Time will tell, but until then we are living well and treasuring friendships and the little things.
Smile my friend. It is contagious and it improves everyone's outlook.

I think that may be what struck a chord for me, too. My mom went through this 8 years ago and died 7 years ago. Pretty much the same story as yours.mekender wrote:The 28th of this month will be 5 year since my mother was taken by the same cancer... For me this whole thing is very emotional.

Hot stuff there and glad to hear the treatment seemed to go well. Keep her brain busy and enjoy life. Waiting for your word on the trip. Any special dinners or do you want a REAL Tex-Mex meal? Cat allergies? Had to remember to ask that.

Take Rod up on his offer. It's worth it, just to hear him tell stories.
