I learned a couple years ago that doctors not only don't know everything, some HATE to admit what they don't know. I had a fever and rash, and since it was Sunday morning I went to the local urgent care center, where they gave me Amoxicillin and told me to take Benedryl for the rash. A couple days later the rash was still making me nuts, so I went to my usual doctor, who sent me to a dermatologist and also had blood work to see if anything else was up. My liver enzymes came in VERY high. I asked him if the Amoxicillin (which I was still taking when I had the blood drawn) could cause that, he said not that he know of. So he sent me to a gastroenterologist, ordered an abdominal ultra-sound, etc. When I got home I did a google search for Amoxicillin and "liver" and came up with all sorts of information about that antibiotic causing the liver to go apeshit. When I finally saw the gastro (and I was done with the Amoxicillin) everything was back to normal.Aesop wrote:Hurray! Second opinions FTW!! I should point out I had NO symptoms of liver problems (jaundice, pain, etc), the only indicator was the enzyme levels. My doctor and I were discussing those levels in his office, in front of his computer, and had he done the same google search I did he'd have seen what I saw. So I could have just come back in two weeks, had more blood drawn, and spared me three missed days of work (because the places I had to go weren't open on weekends or evenings).
