Anything we don't eat, the dogs eat.
Anything the dogs don't eat, the vultures eat.
It would be sad that we don't use the bones, except that we have advanced too far to use bones for tools when steel does far better and for far much longer.
I have watched game dressed and even myself dressed game that I have taken. We cut off meat we can eat and anything that gets tainted along with the innards goes to the "gut pile" and all the bones go to the dogs. Nothing gets wasted that way.
Actually, even if left to nature the carcass of the animal will be consumed by it. There are a LOT of scavengers in the wild that could feast off our kills, but it would be a crying shame to let them grow off what we could. Especially when it tastes so damn good, better than anything you can buy out of a supermarket!

Down home oyster shell is commonly used in place of gravel for paving. IIRC, the Spanish ground up oyster shell for mortar when they built Castillo De San Marcos in St. Augustine.Mud_Dog wrote:ETA: Did you know oyster shells make great pothole fillers?

You see oyster shell driveways in alot of small New England villages. I believe some even require it(I think Cape Cod does) to maintain the "quaint" feel of such places(which typically have strict ordinances about outside appearances of homes).
One of the big reasons why it was used is simple: It's CHEAP. Typically half the cost of gravel.

Obviously, the solution to this problem is to genetically engineer animals that not only want to be eaten, but have the verbal powers necessary to articulate that desire. Thus the PETA weanies will have to directly argue with the food.

I'm surprised they're still using the oyster shells for driveways -- SC has a very healthy oyster pop for multiple reasons -- among which is many of the beds are privately owned -- but, another part that's been helping is collecting the oyster shells and putting them back on the beds.

I don't know if they feel pain or not, but I DO KNOW that when I twist a lobster's tail off, they don't bitch and complain as much as when I stuff them in a pot of boiling water. GEE, I wonder why that is??? Maybe they don't feel pain at ALL, since I see them slowly and unhurriedly trying to crawl around on the counter while I drop their tails into the boiling water to cook them, and they're cruising around on the counter looking for something to eat.

Lobsters and crabs feel pain?
I am a compassionate kind of person. I apply salve to them.
Denis' lobster salve:
2 large egg yolks
3 tablespoons lemon juice (or half lemon, half lime)
A pinch each of salt and freshly-ground white pepper
(optional) a tiny pinch of Colemans English mustard powder
Olive oil (yellow, not the green extra-virgin sort), or half/half olive and grapeseed oils
Whisk everything but the oil together until smooth and light.
Add the oil dropwise and keep whisking.
Stop when you have mayonnaise.
To make thousand island dressing, add a splash of tomato ketchup, a few drops of Maggi, a shot of cognac and some chopped salted capers.
