Or, there's what we call the hobo dinner. On a big piece of aluminum foil, drop a half-pound of good hamburger. Top with a slice of onion, some thin-sliced potatoes, and maybe a sliced carrot. Salt and pepper. Then fold the whole package into a bundle and drop it into the campfire. Let it sizzle for 45 minutes, pull it out. Eat. Enjoy. Revel in the goodness.

One per camper should suffice. For dessert, core an apple, stuff some butter into the hole, top with cinnamon and sugar. Wrap in aluminum foil and drop in the fire. While you're eating the hobo dinner, the apple cooks.

Clean-up on both of those only requires that you throw away the aluminum foil.

Mountain House it is! Check out their Beef Stew in #10 cans. Will it be as good as the recipes above? No. But it's about the best "FAST and EASY w/ little clean up meal" for camping I've found. I've even supplemented it w. fresh bacon and ground beef at times.

That sounds tasty. I'm actually going to throw a few of those on top of my wood stove this week. Do you flip it or just let it sit?

Not having a good day, are you?

There's the old menu of grits and poke. They can grit their teeth, poke their feet under the table and wish they had something to eat.

I've been in the whiskey. Y'all excuse me.

I've never flipped one, but I suppose it depends on how "done" you want it. If you don't think it will leak grease over everything, flip it over. They're also good with mushrooms in the mix, maybe a few stalks of asparagus. Let your palate be your guide.

You just invoked many a meal and wonderful memories of my yoot. :) Hmmmmmm. I thought of posting the same thing but ran out of time earlier.

For variety, take a large onion, split in half at the "equator", clear it out to make a hollow ball. Stuff with a ball of ground beef, put the two halves back together, put in the coals for 15-20 minutes.

Never flipped ours, but I never did it on stove. Buried in coals of a campfire, so the had heat from all sides.

Or, take your recipe and stuff a whole cabbage. (Cabbage on outside, onion, then beef). Or, just split a whole cabbage, stuff it with a stick of margarine, salt and pepper, then wrap in foil and drop it in the fire. Let it sit in the fire for about 30 minutes, the drag it out.

I could cook like this all day. And I have.
