Well, I'm not reusing the oil; mostly it is just there for doing the occasional stir fry to add some variety to camping fare. No telling how many times it will "freeze" and thaw before it gets used up, but it sounds like I don't have a lot to worry about. I guess I'll just plan on taking a new bottle out once a year and dumping the rest of the old container, so it doesn't get too old.HTRN wrote:2)The issue with reheating oil is that it forms a toxin, known as 4-hydroxy-trans-2-nonenal (HNE). Oh, you can reuse a coupla times.
The toxin issue comes from commercial, institutional use, where it may be reheated a half dozen times, before being tossed.

Well, there ya' go, eating healthy can be toxic. And it snows in Texas too, so other than places like SoCal, the rest of the nation SHOULD have PLENTY of animal-fat-based oils available.

Damn that's cold... we should really think about building a cabin at our other location for winter use. Even our trip earlier this month was a little on the chilly side...Netpackrat wrote:Thanks for the info. FWIW, I checked the local temp at the closest public airport (about 3-4 miles away) back in January, and it was -49F at one point.
That way, you know, we wouldn't have to worry about bringing out new veggie oil.

We leave certain item up at the lodge in case someone requires emergency food, supplies etc. but it is stored in a "bear bin" inside the lodge...basically a very heavy gauge steel chest, bolted to the floor and wall and with a padlock on it...The key is on a hook above it with a sign in English, French, German and Inuit/Indian saying "Key Is Here" with a big arrow and a key symbol ...
We'll store flours, grains, salt, pepper, vegetable cooking oil, Crisco shortening, spices etc. and it's all OK next Spring when we come back because the bears haven't learned to read yet...
We also store any wood handled items in a similar cabinet as the porcupines love to chew on them for the salt from our sweat.
The safest to keep at the lodge is the Crisco shortening (vegetable) as you can use it right away by breaking a piece off the frozen square and drop it directly into the fry pan...

Yeah, it sounds like I won't be working in the morning due to the volcano again, so I'm staying up.

Is the volcano nearby and are you in any danger from after shocks and of course ash?Netpackrat wrote:Yeah, it sounds like I won't be working in the morning due to the volcano again, so I'm staying up.
I haven't been keeping close enough tags on the matter but have they suspended air service into your area and you have no planes to work on or is it because of air quality?
I hope you return to work shortly and the activity stops with no harm to you or yours...
If you have to flee, I'll take your books off your hands

By-the-by, did you ever send those bear books?

The volcano is about 100 miles away IIRC to the southwest, on the other side of cook inlet. Other than ash, it doesn't really pose any physical danger to Anchorage. We had a light dusting the other day, but not much.SeekHer wrote: Is the volcano nearby and are you in any danger from after shocks and of course ash?
The company I work for services mainly foreign (asian) carriers, and they seem to have decided not to send any planes through while the volcano is active. During a previous eruption several years ago, our biggest customer had a 747 go through some ash, and arrive home with 4 ruined engines. So, they are a little bit paranoid this time around.I haven't been keeping close enough tags on the matter but have they suspended air service into your area and you have no planes to work on or is it because of air quality?
It appears that I have secured new employment, so hopefully it will be more or less moot in short order.I hope you return to work shortly and the activity stops with no harm to you or yours...
I'm embarrassed to report that they are still sitting in the same place they were last time you sent me your address. Since I don't know what I did with it, send me a PM and I'll take care of it, since I have lots of time on my hands these days. If I don't work tomorrow morning, I will have missed an entire week. Argh. I got as far as getting the customs form needed to send them, and didn't do anything else beyond that.If you have to flee, I'll take your books off your hands![]()
