I am the shorter of the two fighters. This is from last November. They are working on editing the fight from February. I have another one in 19 days.

I really enjoy this sport, even though I normally fight people at least 30# heavier, 20 years younger and 2-5" taller. I bat about 4-500 on the win loss ratio.

That is some nice looking armor.

Armored fighting where your not actually looking to get through to the soft meaty center is interesting.

Well, they are friends of mine and actually damaging them or me, means less opponents for future fights. But we did have a guy get hurt at a tournament. He didn't wear a proper gorget (neck and collarbone armor) and got a 2 handed axe to the collarbone. 1/4" of that bone turned to powder. bad luck mixed with stupid got him 12 weeks out of work, but we group funded keeping him in food and bought him a proper gorget for next time.

I just meant from a historical perspective it was all about poking through a weak spot. Obviously you guys wouldn't be going at it with rondel daggers.
The armed and armored wrestling match is pretty neat when it is all in fun. Did he forget the gorget or did he just feel he didn't need it. Even a blunt axe is basically a hammer. Glad he recovered.

Is that armor brigandine or just heavy leather?

The trade off for not wearing up to snuff armor is greater mobility and more stamina. The disadvantage is if someone hits the gap, you risk injury. In one on one fighting the risk is MUCH lower. In Melee (typically 5 on 5 to start) the risk is MUCH higher.
duels are about points, 3 for throwing the opponent to the ground, 2 for clean head strikes, 1 for clean other strikes and 2 for any strike after you have thrown your opponent (if you retain the dominant position)
Melee is to the death (meaning forcing an opponent to 3 points of contact). So if my team knocks down one of their fighters, it is now 5 on 4. If we then knock down another, 5 on 3 and this is where 2 on my team can hold a guy while I whoop him with a 2 handed axe -- how my friend got injured.

My armor (and most other people's) armor is brigandine. Mine in the video weighs 17#. My new one weighs 9# and provides almost the same level of protection in duels.

Dropping that much weight off the gear must help out, especially as the fight drags on. What kind of suspension do you use inside the helmet? Modern materials or leather and such?

For my helmet I have the modern Army suspension system. It does require me to have a string attached to the back of the head piece so I can pull that piece into position while donning. But it is VERY secure once on and buckled. We also have a "simon strap" on the outside rear that fastens to the rear of the brig (chest and back armor). It acts as an aid in not having the helmet come off completely if the straps break or get off your chin.

not the official videos. Shot by one of the fighters from the side of the cage. My fight starts with the MOV that ends in 095. 3 two minute rounds feels like forever

spoiler alert, I lost, but just barely to a guy 15 years younger and he contested his own win. He was pretty sure I won. But we are friends so no big deal. I am there for the fight. I like to win, but it isn't that important to me. Not to mention he foiled my grapple game so I didn't deserve to win.

Do the shield strikes and knees count for points? I am going to have to watch more of this to really get all the nuance of it. 6 minutes of exchanging blows and wrestling in all that armor looks really exhausting. Good exercise I am sure.

the only thing that counts for points are clean hits. Meaning If you and I are fighting and I clip your shield on the way to hitting your head, zero points. If I hit your head with the flat of the sword, zero points. If I don't land the blow with convincing authority, zero points. Same for any other location.

Throwing the opponent - 3 points
clean head hit - 2 points
clean extremity hit - 1 point
reversing a throw - 1 point
all blows from the dominant position after throwing an opponent - 2 points
all blows from the subordinate position after being thrown, 1 point

headbutts, zero points but the crowd loves it
kicks and knee strikes count as a weapon would
shield blows also count as the other weapon would
punches with the gauntlet also count as a weapon would
