Petrified Forest has issued two announcements on USA Jobs for a GL-9 protection ranger position – one for status candidates and one for nonfederal employees. The park is also accepting resumes from employees interesting in being considered for a lateral transfer.
Although the park currently has just one vacancy, they may hire up to three employees from this announcement.

Serves as an NPS law enforcement commissioned park ranger primarily responsible for performing duties including detection and investigation of violations of federal criminal laws, apprehension and detention of violators, protection of life and property, and enforcement of all applicable laws, rules, and regulations protecting and insuring the safe use of National Park resources.
KEY REQUIREMENTS:
* Must be at least 21 and not over 37 years of age
* Must possess or be qualified for an NPS level I or Level II commission
* Must have emergency medical services certification
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
You must meet the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for the position by the closing date of this announcement to be considered for the position. The Qualification Standards for this position are:
One full year of specialized experience, working on own initiative in selecting and applying methods, techniques, and procedures is duties such as enforcing laws and regulations; patrolling roads and property; assisting in preliminary investigation of felonies; obtaining and protecting evidence; maintaining crowd control, taking necessary actions to preserve the peace; issuing warnings and citations; responding to emergency calls; investigating accidents, complaints, disturbances and other problems; administering firstaid; performing building and park security patrols; monitoring security and fire alarm systems; explaining regulations to visitors; providing information and advice on activities and cultural, historical, and/or natural resources history and locations. The experience must have been equivalent to the duties of at least GS-07 positions in Federal service.

Successful completion of two (2) full academic years of graduate education at an accredited institution of higher learning with closely related subjects pertinent to law enforcement, natural or cultural resource protection or a master’s or equivalent degree related to law enforcement or resource protection. If qualification or partial qualification is based on education, you must submit a copy of transcripts with your application.

Applicants may qualify based on an equivalent combination of work experience (of the appropriate quality and level) and qualifying education as described above.
Individuals selected for law enforcement positions must be twenty-one (21) years of age or older.
This position is a primary law enforcement position under 5 U.S.C. 8336(c) and 5 U.S.C. 8412(d). Persons making their first entry into a law enforcement position under these authorities cannot be selected if over age 37. Persons already in covered secondary positions or persons with previous approved service who apply for a primary position cannot be considered if their age at reentry into a primary position exceeds 37 years after subtracting their years of service in covered positions. The maximum entry age limit was established under the age discrimination prohibitions contained in Section 15 of the Age Discrimination in Employment Act. Maximum age limitations may not be waived for any applicant including those entitled to veteran’s preference. IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION, PLEASE PROVIDE DATE OF BIRTH AND EVIDENCE OF CURRENT OR PREVIOUS COVERAGE THAT WOULD QUALIFY.
Applicant must possess or be eligible for a National Park Service Level II or higher Law Enforcement Commission by the closing date of this announcement. Failure to provide adequate documentation that this requirement has been met will remove you from consideration.
Applicant must, at a minimum, have First Aid and CPR certification. Higher levels of certification (First Responder, EMT, etc.) are desirable. Incumbent of position must be able to secure and/or maintain an Emergency Medical Technician (National Registry) Certification.
Background investigations are required for Federal employees who perform law enforcement duties. An individual selected for this position is subject to a Special Agreement Check (SAC) and a Background Investigation (BI). An adjudication on the SAC is required before the appointment of the selected individual will be finalized. The date the selected individual will enter on duty depends on receipt of a favorable SAC determination. Once employment has started, continued employment is contingent on receipt of a favorable adjudication on the BI.
This is a drug-testing designated position. In accordance with Executive Order 12564, applicants selected for this position are required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. Incumbent of the position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use as a condition of continued employment.
This is an arduous duty position requiring prolonged standing, walking over rough, rocky, uneven ground; recurrent bending, reaching, lifting, and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds; and other strenuous activities requiring good agility and dexterity. Incumbent must be able to exert significant and sustained physical effort when conditions dictate. Duties may include an occasional demand for extraordinarily strenuous activities in emergencies under adverse environmental conditions over extended periods of time.
Prior to appointment, applicant must be determined physically fit to perform strenuous and physically demanding duties by an authorized government physician. As a condition of employment, incumbent must periodically pass a strenuous physical performance test. Failure to pass will result in disqualification for the position.
Prior to appointment, the person selected for this position must pass a medical examination (which includes vision, hearing, cardiovascular, and mobility of extremities) given by an authorized government physician.
The applicant must be able to possess firearms under the terms of the Gun Control Act of 1968, as amended (18 U.S.C. 922 (g)(9)). Incumbent is required to carry a firearm while performing duties and must maintain firearm proficiency.
The person selected for the position must be free of any domestic violence convictions.
Incumbent is required to operate a government vehicle. A valid state driver license is required.
This position is covered under 5 U.S.C. 8336(c) or 8412(d) and is entitled to enhanced law enforcement pay.
HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:
You will be evaluated to determine if you meet the minimum qualifications required; and on the extent to which your application shows that you possess the KSAs (knowledges, skills, and abilities) associated with this position as defined below. Typically, possession of KSAs is demonstrated by experience, education, or training. The goal of KSAs is to identify those candidates who are potentially best qualified to perform the duties of the position to be filled. The narrative responses to the KSAs will be used to determine the degree to which you possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required by this position. The knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) required to accomplish the duties of this position have been identified as follows:
1. Ability to perform law enforcement duties by methods of vehicle, horse, and foot patrols, including front and backcountry patrols, criminal and accident investigations, and resource-related protection activities.
2. Ability to communicate and interact effectively, both orally and in writing, including presentations to internal and external audiences, interpersonal communications, preparation of investigative reports and correspondences, and dealing with persons in stressful situations.
3. Ability to perform a range of emergency services, including but not limited to emergency medical services, search and rescue duties, wildland fire and structural fire duties. (fully explain training, experience, and rating level).
