Wad

Part of a shotgun Shell that holds the Shot until it is fired.

The wad is usually a plastic cup type piece that is inserted into the Hull holds the Shot in a compact clump and keeps it from mixing in with the Powder. The wad opens up on exit from the end of the barrel and falls away, allowing the Shot to start to expand.
