Not really surprising since he had no legal duty to protect anyone. This is in line with a long history of similar determinations.

I guess Florida is different...in Texas, all deputies are employed at the behest of the sheriff or constable. Both are elected positions. So the sheriff or constable can fire any deputy at any time. (Including the election of a new one, although this is rare now days.)

Which is exactly why so many people dislike unions.

In Ohio I think any one with the rank of Captain or above is employed at will by the Sheriff. Deputies and Sergeants are union.
