"Second Amendment People"

Post by John_in_Longview »

Anyone else seeing their friends freak out about Trump's comments that "Second Amendment People" could do something about Hillary's Supreme Court Justice selections?

Lib at work here started to say something, and then I replied that we have the best grassroots and lobby in all of politics, which seems to have shut him down. He's a gun owner himself though, so I doubt he was really looking for that fight.

Trump is fighting a losing battle. Whatever he does, whatever he says will be misconstrued in the press. They're doing everything that they can to put Hillary over the top. The mainstream media not only dislikes Trump, they loathe him.

The media is willing to ignore Hillary's felonies, mis-represent Trump's statements, give Hillary a cloak of invincibility, and do everything in their power to make sure that he's crushed.

1. Your first point is true of every GOP nominee. The media (as it always does) treated Trump with kid gloves during the primaries (and gave him approximately $2B in free media). They did not do this because they thought he was the most electable candidate.

2. Because of 1 any successful GOP nominee has to be disciplined and stay on message. If George W. Bush can do it, it isn't impossible because it is not like he was the best politician this side of Reagan. Trump is contingently incapable of doing this; which is exacerbated in Trump because his instincts are all leftist, so in trying to act like a Republican he says things which he thinks a Republican would say, which tend to be wacky characteratures of conservative ideas because that is about his depth of knowledge of conservatism.

So what will happen?

2% chance he either backs out because he realizes getting killed in November hurts his brand.
1% chance he gets his crap together and successfully unifies the GOP
2% chance he implodes entirely but stays on and the Libertarian ticket becomes the de facto GOP ticket
95% chance Hillary wins in a romp.

Thanks Trumpsters. This WAS a very winnable election.

So, what's the answer? If we're to learn from this debacle, what is the lesson?

Should Trump have not been allowed to run as a Republican? He obviously beat all of the "conservative" and "establishment" candidates. The simple truth is that the party didn't run a candidate that had the stones to beat Trump. So, what is the lesson that the party should draw from that? Should candidates be vetted by the party before they're allowed to jump in the race?

If, (as is becoming increasingly obvious), Hillary wins the Oval Office, then 2020 will also be an extremely winnable election. What should the party do between now and then to make sure that they have a fair shot at winning it?

We just keep getting further and further off the beaten path.

Trump won because the GOP refused to support Cruz, and did everything they could to tear down Cruz. They just thought that one of THEIR candidates would win instead, and by the time it became obvious that wouldn't happen, they had lost control of the process.

If Hillary wins, I don't think the 2020 election will matter. The GOP will repeat the same old rhetoric to fund raise and get votes, but they still won't MEAN any of it. A pox on them for putting us in this position.

The plan was for this to be Jeb!'s turn, with Rubio on deck for next time.
