Robert Conroy, "1882: Custer in Chains". One of his two post-humous novels. Custer survives Little Big Horn, becomes president, later invades Cuba. I need to read up on the real Spanish-American War to do a compare & contrast.

Sawdust Caesar by George Seldes, the socialist newspaper reporter. Copyrighted 1935, so it reports on Mussolini's early years without the severe editing of his deeds that occurred in the mid to late 30's. His Blackshirts were as violent as Hitler's Brownshirts, only Mussolini did not have to contend with brawling in the street with Communists.

I'm having more difficulty sticking with Post Captain than I expected. It has abrupt changes in location and action that I find confusing. Someone is in his room at at an inn thinking about something and in the next sentence, he's talking to someone as he enters a cabin in the ship.

Yeah, that one was probably the slowest of the series. I usually skip it when I do my yearly(ish) re-read.

That is actually very encouraging to hear. I bought the first six, and I was very much looking forward to them.

I picked up The Gulag Archipelago for a buck in hardcover at my local liberry sale. It's fascinating reading, and harrowing.

I finished the first three Discworld books, they were okay. Silly, but okay. I'm presently reading Blindsight by Peter Watts, a hard sci fi novel about man's first contact with an alien race.

Natural Born Heroes by Chris McDougall. How a bunch of amateur soldiers and Cretan Resistance fighters on Crete kidnapped and smuggled out a German general.

Blindsight was good. Watts has some interesting ideas. (Edit to add): I'm inclined to disagree with several of his ideas, but they are interesting nevertheless.
