what is a good pair of all around boots that will be sufficient in the mild winter here in NC?

i would love something that i could wear in both summer and winter, almost like a timberland half height boot.

OK, the LL Bean hunting boots arrived on Friday, so here are my first impressions. I'll post on them later in the winter to discuss my impression under actual usage.

First, they're very light, my wife even commented on that when she picked up the box they came in.

Second, they fit me perfectly. As I mentioned in my original post, I have odd feet (flat as pancakes, high instep, wide foot, narrow heel). The arch support isn't too high (painful for folks we feet as flat as mine), there's plenty of room, and my heel doesn't move too much when I walk. They appear to be very well made, there's enough insulation for the weather I intend to wear them in. Unlike my previous boots they have those little hooks to make lacing the top easier, I like that.

As an added bonus, the soles have a nice tread, should work well in snow and leave interesting patterns on hippies.

Assuming they really are waterproof I expect to get good use from them.
