I have often wondered about this, but not necessarily with an AR. is there any gun out there that doesn't stress its receiver very much, and thus would be particularly conducive to being made of an inferior material (like wood)? Would a bolt action .22, with a wooden receiver and a metal bolt, be able to last long? I assume things get alot more tricky when you get into centerfire cartridges. Perhaps something in a pistol caliber?

WOW. I've been thinking of how cool it would be to have an AR that was made from a clear material, so you could see through it during operation. That would be really neat!
And may I say, from a moral point of view, I think there can be no justification for shoving snack cakes up your action.

justashooter in that thread recommended black walnut (I wouldn't use current dimensional pine either, for whatever that's worth -- I sure as heck wouldn't put it up next to my face and pull the trigger). I'd be inclined to go one better and use black locust or lignum vitae. I bet they'd work pretty well, if you weren't running hot custom loads.

Well, what about a dedicated .22LR? Those look good, and they'd certainly stand up to a wood receiver, eh?
