Beretta Px4 Storm - Range Report of Sorts

Post by Jericho941 »

A friend of mine bought his first pistol recently, the Beretta Px4 Storm in 9mm.

Now before I get any static for not trying to talk him into a MAN'S gun, I didn't try to talk him out of the caliber for a few reasons. He chose it for its mild recoil (he has an admittedly low tolerance for it and is afraid of .45s), he's used to it from the M9 (but didn't feel like shelling out the extra cash for said M9), and plans on getting a Cx4 eventually.

Well, we took it to the range, as it came in the box. It poked holes in the target. We tried a couple of ammo brands. It ran everything but aluminum-cased CCI Blazer just fine, and was pretty much as accurate as the shooters.

Trigger is... well, typical for a DA/SA auto. Has a lot of creep in SA, I thought. We haven't played with the grips yet.

Edit: In retrospect that was a lot shorter than expected, but... eh. I feel oddly ambivalent about it. Is gun. Is shoots.

Short, to-the-point.

Where's the pictures?

CCI Blazer aluminum can be a bad thing for semi-autos. It's OK in revolvers. The aluminum case can become scratched and oxidize. Aluminum oxide is the grit on sandpaper. It can scratch your chamber or cause it to wear out faster. A few boxes won't really hurt, but a steady diet over time is bad for your gun.

I suggest Blazer brass or Win. White Box. My 9mm's all feed and perform well with WWB ammo.

Wolf steel-cased ammo has issues as well. I don't mind it for AK's and SKS's. If your barrel gets too hot, the laquer will melt and glue the case to the chamber. It will come out, but it may have to be removed by dropping a rod down from the muzzle end or prying it out with a screwdriver. The bond is weak, but strong enough to make the round stick when cycling the bolt normally. Plus the powder stinks. It smells terrible. It burns and propels the projectile, but it smells like rat urine. Wolf Gold is a little more expensive, but much better in quality.

WRT recoil and .45's. It's a firm push, not snappy at all. I know several women that shoot .45 ACP. It's really not bad at all on recoil from a 4" - 5" barrel. Try it, you might like it.
My ideas are mine. You go out and get your own!

The Px4 was on my short list of first pistols to buy. I decided on the Ruger SR9 instead just because of how slim it is.

I don't have any issues with .45s, but he's convinced from one rental experience years ago that he can't control them.

All I had was my crappy camera phone. It wouldn't be altogether clear if you were looking at pictures of a gun or a deformed crow.
