New Shooter Report

Post by ShadyDexter »

I took my baby sister out shooting today. I brought my Marlin .22lr Cowboy and a Ruger Mk. III .22lr. She had gotten upset when I had dry fired the Mosin Naget I bought yesterday in the house (yes, I did check the chamber and did not point it anything more delicate then the floor).

So, today we drove out back and found a berm and I introduced her to gun safety and plinking. Nothing dramatic. Just shot at some boards. Tried out some sub-sonics and about a hundred hi-velocities. Learned that the Ruger isn't going to accept hollow points. She liked the Marlin. And she says she looks forward to going to a real range and learning to shoot proper. So, yay.

The sad thing is I basically teach to shoot the same way the Navy taught me, here is a gun. It shoots this. Here is the saftey features. here is how to handle a gun safely, aim, shoot. So, I don't know how to teach proper shooting technique (maybe when I learn some myself?) The fun is there ...

Edit: Forgot to mention it, Rumpshot, but this is my excuse for not showing up to the Farmers Market.

you should take a good look at the internals on the ruger... a Mk III shouldnt have any problems with any .22 ammo

With a New Shooter Report, there is no apology necessary. I was curious though.

But, with your comments, you really do need to SERIOUSLY consider the Payson Appleseed Shoot Sept 20-21.

Also make sure your sister understands she is welcome to come to Rumpshot's Revenge III. There is no pressure to do anything but watch if she wants. There should be two or more women in attendance. Mel does shoot, not sure if Mike's wife shoots or not. My wife usually makes an appearance. There could be others.

Bringing my wife along, she may or may not shoot, she would love company to talk to though. She'll have her .38 and .380, I'll have a couple of .22 pistols and rifles and the .30 carbine so there will be plenty of guns for ladies who are intimidated.

Yep, I'll invite her. I already invited her fiancee. I'll prolly invite the oldest of my little sisters and her fiancee as well. Erica is apparently a crack shot with a Compact 9mm Glock.

Yay, This could turn into a real family fun time. Wives, girlfriends, sisters even are all welcome. I guess I could invite the former NRA President from Tucson to join in the fun and frivolity too.

Not just the women are invited, we could always use more NEW Shooters of all ages and genders too.

That my friend is a small price to pay for the experience. Having the approval factor for new "needed" hardware is much better than bluffing about just pulling it from the safe.

Sigh, i wish i could get that experience... it was a fight to get my wife to let me even keep a gun next to the bed in a lockbox

My first thought on reading that was the old toast: "Here's to our wives and girlfriends. May they never meet!"

Could lead to a sharp, if brief, increase in ammo usage. ;)
...even before I read MHI, my response to seeing a poster for the stars of the latest Twilight movies was "I see 2 targets and a collaborator".
