Okay, I'll play.
My go-to deer rifle, in America's Caliber. A Savage 110 in .30-06
And a small collection of Handi Rifles that I acquired several years ago for an article.

Yeah, we do, but I'm becoming more accustomed to the .308 and I'm beginning to see the appeal. Especially in the Scout rifle. The more I shoot that rifle, the more I like it and understand it.First Shirt wrote:Us old-timers likes us some '06, don't we?

Savage makes left-hand scout rifles? Is that a custom order?
Remember, folks, you can't spell "douche" without "Che."

Yeah, always wanted one, and found out that if it can be built with existing parts, they'll build it.SoupOrMan wrote:Savage makes left-hand scout rifles? Is that a custom order?
About $200 over standard price, but lefty and in oddball caliber.
Like PawPaw, it's fast becoming a favorite, the.more I shoot it.

I think NPR has this one right.toad wrote:Has anybody shot a big bear with a 7mm-08, and if so what load should one have loaded for an accidental encounter?
The heaviest bullets I've ever used in this caliber were 154 gr. RNSPs from Hornady, loaded to about 2200 fps. Powderpuff load, but still delivering good accuracy. But this load basically mimics the .30-30 Win., and I don't think I'd volunteer to use it on big stuff that bites.
Our loads are 140 gr. Nosler bullets (Ballistic Tips or Partitions, but I'm going to try some Accubond this fall), although the new Senior Minion is still running the 120 gr. spitzers at about 2500 fps. But she doesn't weigh much more that a couple of Big Mac combos, so can't really ballast a much stouter load.
At a gun show a while back, we picked up a box of 173 gr. Kynoch FMJ/RN bullets (I think The Minions had visions of Karamojo Bell dancing in their heads) but we haven't had a chance to load any and try them out.
Honestly, for anything elk-size or smaller, a near-max loaded 140 gr. bullet should be plenty.
