maybe its just me... but...

If time = money then the reloading issue becomes even more of a case of slim margins. Not just the time for the "actual reloading" but the learning curve is wicked.

I read Chis stuff on this and he has made a good case for it... I went ahead and ate the start up cost. I got the dies and the stuff... but then it became apparent that ... i have a day job and only so many cycles to commit-

and the learning curve is harsh especially if you are trying to do something complicated like 308 for a non- bolt action.

Yeah, but the knowledge and experience you gain is quite valuable, and once you get it down, you can pick it right back up later and have confidence you can do it right.

I haven't reloaded in decades, but I'm collecting brass, got my dies, a bunch of primers and powder, and am slowly getting ready to get back into reloading - ESPECIALLY if the smelly-man wins the White House.

If your just plinking/shooting at paper with handguns, cast is the way to go - Meister Cast has 1000 9mm 122grn RN for 90 bucks.. INCLUDING SHIPPING.

That's 9 cents each. Add in another 2 cents for the primer and 3 cents for the powder, and thats 14 cents, not counting the cost of brass.

That's 14 bucks a hundred.

Cast can be had way cheaper than that. If you're paying $90/1000 for 9mm cast you're paying too much.link

115gr FMJ the buy now price is $95/K delivered here

Using my primer & powder costs from latest Powder Valley orders & assuming 5.5gr powder

$4.52/100 w/ 125gr cast

$6.42/100 w/ 115gr FMJ

Yes, that is not as big a savings as when shooting 45 Colt in my old model Vaquero or even 45ACP in my 1911 but it's still $50/1000 savings over WWB price quoted here.

For me, even at breakeven it's waaaay cheaper than therapy. ;)

I've heard it said that you won't really save money, but you WILL have more ammo to shoot.

Really :?:

Just start shooting uberthumper calibers like .XXX Weatherby, Rigby, H&H, UltraMag, etc. When each squeeze of the trigger costs $4.00 or more, you can realize savings REAL fast. A new set of dies, 200 brass and bullets for my 375 RUM cost me $150. Powder was another $60 and primers was $2.50. I already had the press so it cost me $212.50 and my time for 200 rounds. Since ammo was $75 per box of 20 at the time minus shipping, it would have cost me about $750.00 + shipping for the equivalent amount of factory ammo. My time and previous investment was worth the $537.50 + shipping difference.

I'll take your anecdotal evidence and raise you data. 8-)

I defer to your expertise of course, Mr. Mousegun. LOL I believe I was quoting one of the knowledgeable members from the previous home of this forum.

I never could justify reloading 9mm, but .45 ACP, .45 Colt, and .44Mag were definitely worth reloading.

The reason ammo is so high is because we're having to use it to pacify some islamo-fascist goat [strike]f@#$ers[/strike] herders. It's cheaper to shoot my AK than my 9mm. Once that settles down, assuming we don't have to kick Putin's @$$, prices should slowly drop. $5 a box 9mm is probably gone for good, but maybe $7 or $8. $6 per box 5.56mm maybe. .308 was going up before 9/11/01.
My ideas are mine. You go out and get your own!

Meistercast is expensive, after looking around(I don't buy 'em, I make 'em myself! ;) ), but keep in mind shipping is included, which will add $10-20 depending on shipping method. Lasercast has similar prices.

Midstate, on the otherhand, has 115grn 9mm RN for $45/1000, .45 200grn RN for $54/1000.

Personally, I'd be leery of buying them from anybody who you don't know the source of, simply because of the hassle of constant load development. Fortunately, that seller is the actual Manufacturer(and has a website - see here), so getting more is pretty straightforward.
