The Aurora is one of two ships that survive today from the Battle of Tsushima Strait. The other is the Mikasa, Admiral Togo's flagship, which is on static display in Japan.

The Aurora had most of her command killed during the battle of Tsushima. While the rest of the Russian fleet surrendered to Togo, the Aurora, along with a few other stragglers from the Russian fleet, slipped away to Manila harbor, where they were interned for the remainder of the Russo-Japanese war by the United States. Because of that escape, the Aurora was never captured by the Japanese.

The Aurora fired the shot that signaled the storming of the Winter Palace, and capture of the Tsar. This is seen by the Russians as the beginning of the Bolshevik revolution, the Russian equivalent of the "shot heard around the World" at Lexington Green in 1775.

The Aurora is still part of the Russian Navy. It is as important to the Russians as the USS Constitution (also still a commissioned vessel in the US Navy) is to the US.

I'm curious about "under her own power". In the video I can see a bit of light smoke from one funnel, but I'm not convinced that 7600 tons is "moving under "his" (as the Rooskis say) own power. Even if the old smudgepots have been converted from coal to oil there just isn't enough smoke or heat shimmer for anything other than an auxiliary generator or two to provide electrical systems, at least as far as I can see. It's great to see the restoration (I wish OUR cheapass government would do the same for Olympia) and as a reminder of battles long ago. The only thrashing I see going on is at the sterns of those tugs.

In a few warship forums it has been pointed out that its just being tugged into place and at the most its only providing enough power to run it's lights.

I consider it ironic that there are signs advertising Samsung and Kia across from where the ship is docked.

Do the guns work? If not, is it really restored?
