Two Birds Down

Post by First Shirt »

Seems that yesterday, two MH-53Es out of Kaneohe MCAS, on a routine night training flight, apparently suffered a mid-air collision. All twelve crew members are missing, and search efforts are being hampered by 30-40 foot swells along the north shore, where the debris field was spotted. Right now, SAR efforts are being carried out by Navy, Coast Guard, and Honolulu Fire Dept. assets.

Haven't heard back from my son-in-law stationed at K-Bay yet today.

If you have a spare prayer or good wish, it would sure be appreciated about now.

Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
Who bidd'st the mighty ocean deep
Its own appointed limits keep;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea!

O Christ! Whose voice the waters heard
And hushed their raging at Thy word,
Who walkedst on the foaming deep,
And calm amidst its rage didst sleep;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea!

Praying for his safety.

Amen. I don't think most people understand just how dangerous military aviation can be, even in training.

Thirty-one years ago today my twin brother was killed flying the HH variant of the bird. The tails had a disturbing tendency of falling off.

He's a SH-60 pilot, NOT a Marine (hates 'em, actually), and is stationed in San Diego.

Thanks. No being a Marine, does not mean he doesn't drive them around from time to time. I thought he was still in San Diego, but again he could have been deployed to Hawaii.

Glad to know that he is likely not involved.

Done! My thoughts go out to the friends and families of all those involved in the collision.

Today was a day for worrying - until about two minutes ago I was waiting on tenterhooks to hear from a close friend and his wife in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso); there was an Al-Qa’ida attack there Friday (yesterday) night / this morning, with at least 26 killed and hundreds injured, including a "European couple". Just got word that they are safe, although nearby the action, which was in a place they frequent.

I hope you also get the all-clear soon.

I spoke with him last night. It's a Marine helicopter squadron, HMH-463.

First Shirt, is that your son-in-law's squadron?

Heard from him a little while ago. He's been on leave this past week, which is why I hadn't heard from him earlier.

Please keep the family members in your prayers.
