Even China has to be wondering if those sad sacks are now a liability.

It depends on which warlord you talk to. China already has problems with its N. Korean guest workers. The old Maoists hate the idea of the S. Koreans taking over the North and having their corruption influencing the Chinese population. " If the S. Korean come North can they be stopped at the Yalu or Beijing for that matter. " On the other hand S. Korea is a very good customer to certain Chinese with influence.

China has a growing demographic problem, too many people too old to work and not enough young people who can work and are demanding and getting more money for their labor. the North Koreans did a deal with the Chinese. They sent "workers" to China and in exchange China pays the N. Korea government directly at cut rate labor prices and the Norks are supposedly pass a part of the money they receive to the guest workers. Some of the guest workers are off the reservation and are stealing and killing to survive. The ones that stay on the reservation suffer from years of malnourishment and do not have a lot of technical competence so they are useful for just grunt work, agricultural jobs and such.

North Koreas two biggest exports are weapons technology and slave Labor.

VICE did an episode where they visited a Nork Labor camp in Siberia, logging trees.

I keep meaning to make up a lists of websites that concern Korea. Part of my interests comes from the fact that I grew up in an area that had a lot of WW II vets and Korean War vets living in it. On top of that their was a cousin of my father who made it as a US Air Force Pilot in that war, flying Saber's, made ace. The outstanding thing was that anyone In my branch of the family made officer. Anyway there were a lot of sad stories from that war an one in particular was in a movie they made a movie about a pilot who flew ground support. A WWII Mustang pilot became a minister after the war and was called up to fly Mustangs for ground support with a bunch of Korean pilots. A wild bunch some of whom were veteran Zero pilots. The communists were pushing the US troops back fast and the Mustangs were hitting just about anything they saw moving. You had to go in fast an hope you didn't get hit. Unfortunately at a river crossing he strafed a bunch that turned out to be refugees fleeing the commies. In the movie they had a sanitized version of the refugees getting hit. People falling down and water splashing up. The reality would have been people being torn into pieces. The American pilot was real upset when he found out he had strafed a refugee group. The Korean pilots tried to console him saying this it was war which is just one long tragedy. The refugees could have died from artillery, machine gun fire in the night, land mines or a number of things. It was just fate the placed them under the guns of a Mustang.

North Korea seems like it will be great for mine-clearance operations. All the controlling junta has to do is spread a rumor that Choco Pies are on sale "just across that valley" and wait for the hungry citizens to do the rest.
