Re: LCS being upgraded to FF
In the late 80's, USS Stark took a Exocet hit and crew saved her and Samuel B Roberts a mine hit aft. Even with her back broke and stern about to fall off, they tied her up and to got to port. That takes bodies, including bodies from neighboring ships to join the work.

All this talk of the LCS trying to be a frigate which is trying to ape the mission of a the destroyer escort has me wondering one thing: why does a destroyer need an escort?
Remember, folks, you can't spell "douche" without "Che."

I hope you're joking. A 'destroyer escort' doesn't escort destroyers, it's a little destroyer suitable for use as an escort. The US military is famous for ridiculously obtuse terminology for everything, you must recall.

Actually, no. I was always wondering why you would need an escort for an escort ship. Compare this to the "escort carrier," which was used in the Atlantic to... escort supply convoys (among other things; the Pacific side was a tad different). "Destroyer escort" always sounded like "ship that escorts destroyers" to me.
My grandfather served on the USS Levy (DE-162) and couldn't explain it.

a destroyer with speed and range enough for escorting ships. Like a good cattle dog or working horse, it's need to be able to surge in, out, ahead and back as required and have the legs to sustain it.
Stark and Samuel B were patrolling and escorting shipping in the straights and gulf of Oman that had been mined by Iran and had fast Iran patrol boats making runs on shipping.

That sounds low for the Perry, but I believe it. It was a pretty compromised ship in a lot of ways.Vonz90 wrote:FFG-7 range 5,000 nautical miles at 18 knGreg wrote: What does cost have to do with anything?
All I said was, we expect a 'frigate' to have greater range/endurance than most other people.
Cost is a separate issue. LCS is a totally retarded misuse of funds, and has been from the start.
German type 124 range 4,000 nautical miles at 18 kn
British type 23 range 7,500 nautical miles at 15 kn
French Horizon class 7,000 nautical miles at 18 kn
I would say we are in the middle of the pack.
Can't find the figure, even in Friedman's book on destroyers. Anyone happen to know the steaming endurance of a Knox? I always thought it was fairly substantial, more than that of anyone else's escorts...

Of course fleet destroyers were just called "destroyers" and thus the confusion.
