Making funeral arrangements for a USMC vet

Post by mekender »

So my BiL is fading fast... Really he left us years ago, he is an institutionalized paranoid schizophrenic and has been deteriorating for a while. My in-laws are down in FL right now visiting him and it appears that his time is short.

So he is a former Marine, non-combat vet from the mid to late 90's, but was honorably discharged. I dont know if my in-laws would actually want any ceremony but I know that he is entitled to it regardless.

So the question is, has anyone set up such? If so how does one go about doing it?

They'll tag the closest unit for a full detail if close enough. "Combat vet" doesn't exist in my mind-just "vet". If you signed on the dotted line, it's a blank check, payable to the USA, for any amount, up to and including your life.

You know, I regret not doing this for my Dad, who was a WW II Marine. He was cremated and wanted his ashes scattered at sea, I wanted to contact the USMC and arrange for something for him, but my brother talked me out of it. He said we'd just take him out on a fishing boat and do it ourselves. Then my Mom got sick and we wound up burying his ashes with her.

Edited to fix a typo.

Talked to my mother in law tonight, they dont want to do the ceremony. But they are still entitled to the death benefit reimbursement I think.
