Judge rules for teacher in classroom banners case

A federal judge has ruled that school officials can't tell a Rancho Peñasquitos math teacher to take down banners he has had on his classroom walls for years proclaiming “In God We Trust,” “God Bless America,” and other sayings.

The school district argued that the 7-foot wide banners in Brad Johnson's classroom at Westview High School proclaim a point of view at odds with the educational mission of the school, and could invite a lawsuit from students or other teachers.

This lawsuit, however, was filed by Johnson. In his 23-page decision issued Friday, U.S. District Judge Roger Benitez denied a motion by the Poway Unified School District to dismiss the case.

Benitez noted the school district allows other teachers to choose what they display on their walls, including Tibetan prayer flags and posters of Buddhist and Islamic messages.

So they don't have problems with the Islam ones but they do with the God ones?

That doesn't really compute.

Bravo for the judge.
