Yeah I was watching that earlier, this one looks dicey for the southern LA coast.

Latest track puts it dead on for labor day morning in New Orleans as a Cat 3 minimum, I am guessing cat 4+ just because of the 88 degree + water temps in the gulf.

And it just goes to show you SOME PEOPLE NEVER LEARN:
New Orleans Repeating Deadly Levee Mistakes

Saturday, August 23, 2008

NEW ORLEANS — Signs are emerging that history is repeating itself in the Big Easy, still healing from Katrina: People have forgotten a lesson from four decades ago and believe once again that the federal government is constructing a levee system they can prosper behind.

In a yearlong review of levee work here, The Associated Press tracked a pattern of public misperception, political jockeying and legal fighting, along with economic and engineering miscalculations since Katrina, that threaten to make New Orleans the scene of another devastating flood.

at least the area is still mostly vacant

the neighborhoods are still over 40% abandoned so there is a good side.

but should this thing hit NO, i will be writing daily email to my congressman and senators expressing my disgust at the idea of my tax dollars paying to rebuild a city that is below sea level for the second time.

I agree such idiocy - but that's government for ya'! NOTHING works better, is more efficient, or cheaper once the government gets involved.

They're getting ready THIS TIME:
Officials may evacuate New Orleans as storm nears

Wednesday, August 27, 2008

By MICHAEL KUNZELMAN and TAMARA LUSH, Associated Press Writers

NEW ORLEANS — On the eve of Hurricane Katrina's third anniversary, a nervous New Orleans watched Wednesday as another storm threatened to test everything the city has rebuilt, and officials made plans to evacuate people, pets and hospitals in an attempt to avoid a Katrina-style chaos.

Forecasters warned that Gustav could grow into a dangerous Category 3 hurricane in the next several days and hit somewhere along a swath of the Gulf Coast from the Florida Panhandle to Texas _ with New Orleans smack in the middle.

Taking no chances, city officials began preliminary planning to evacuate and lock down the city in hopes of avoiding the catastrophe that followed the 2005 storm. Mayor Ray Nagin left the Democratic National Convention in Denver to return home for the preparations.

Hmm, category 3, a mere 3 years after Katrina..

I wonder what the Big Easy did to piss off God so much.

I will be writing my congress weasel expressing my disgust at the idea of people building along any shoreline, floodplain of any kind, tornado alley, Iowa, etc., etc.

Unfortunately it's kind of hard to avoid building in Tornado Alley. The daily commute from the Rockies or Appalachians to work the south forty in Kansas gets a little tiring.

What I don't understand, is why anyone would build or buy a house sitting on a concrete slab with no basement or storm cellar in tornado country (unless water table is an issue such as it is in Florida. In North Texas? not so much).

considering that a great % of the US is on 50year or 100 year floodplains, that would be unreasonable...

however there is one major city that sits below sea level that has been devastated more than once by hurricanes and rebuilt at taxpayer expense.

the wind damage in Katrina didnt do nearly as much as the 14+ feet of water flowing through the streets
