I don’t think it has to be the flu. I think a head cold could get them. Without immunity, though, I wonder how it would appear to western doctors.
The use of the word "but" usually indicates that everything preceding it in a sentence is a lie.
E.g.:
"I believe in Freedom of Speech, but". . .
"I support the Second Amendment, but". . .
