Youtube bans all gun and reloading channels

Post by Netpackrat »

Haven't noticed any other discussion of it here, but it looks as though Youtube is finally getting around to going full retard, and has changed their policies to essentially ban all gun channels. And especially reloading channels (wtf?).

Ultimately I think this is going to end up being good for gun video producers and bad for Youtube, because it's going to force adoption and/or creation of some alternate content host (or hosts). There's simply too much demand for the videos for them to just disappear even if they are all removed from Youtube. And once "guntube" (or whatever) is up and running, if they are smart they won't limit themselves to just gun related content, so it will be the beginning of the end of Youtube's de-facto monopoly as a video host.

How hard would it be to setup a guntube? What steps would need to be taken?

I think those of us who have to ask that question, are probably not the people to do it. Full30.com exists as an example of a good effort by gun people that fell short, because their user interface sucks. I read that InRangeTV (Ian McCollum and Karl Kasarda) have already started uploading their content to Pornhub of all places, and they already had their stuff on "Bitchute" and Full30. I have read some speculation that Pornhub might spin off a non porn related video site to host the gun and other content as it flees Youtube, and their user interface is supposed to be decent (others with more experience with their site will have to verify that... ).

Heavy sigh. :|

ETA: I just went over there. InRangeTV and TFB TV are still there. I guess we'll see for how long.

Guntube and full30 are already set up the former was actually started by an arfcom indutry partner.

A few are also uploading to pornhub, they dont give a crap about content, and are actually set up infrastructure wise for this sort of thing.

The big hurdle isnt technological, its financial - Youtube loses money year after year, but because its integrated into google, it operates as a loss leader. Add in the social isues ("one stop shopping")and you can see why this is an issue.

Husband: "Gun videos, honey."

Husband: "Well... uh..."

In Range's statement:
"Hello,

Thank you for your interest in InRange and for looking into this issue deeper as it is obviously an important one that deals with far more than just our content on InRange, but touches at the core of social media’s control over what has become increasingly “the public sphere of conversation”.

YouTube’s recent update on their policy towards firearm content is extremely poorly worded and open ended. It is unclear what their goals are directly, as well as what content is (or might be) actually effected. YouTube’s actions against firearms related, as well as some other, content over recent history has been increasingly arbitrary and capricious so there is little reason to believe that this new policy is not going to be used to hammer content creators into whatever corner they see fit. Over the last year or so we’ve seen our content be de-prioritized, flagged erroneously, demonetized by AI bots with little recourse, subscribers lose their notifications and subscription status without warning and more.

InRange has taken a number of steps to partially mitigate this attack against our legal and responsible content: we deleted our AdSense account entirely and moved to a crowd sourced funding model wholly via Patreon, have posted a number of videos in regards to digital rights and issues above and beyond that of just firearms related content, and we’ve decentralized the distribution of content to multiple delivery networks. At this time we are currently publishing content simultaneously on YouTube, Full30, Facebook, BitChute and now PornHub. We will not be seeking any monetization from PornHub and do not know what their monetization policies are, we are merely looking for a safe harbor for our content and for our viewers.

I would like to point out that a very simple search on YouTube for marijuana and bong reveals substantial results of people explaining, teaching the use of, advocation and actively using a Federally illegal schedule 1 substance:

https://www.youtube.com/results?search_ ... juana+bong

While I personally believe that people should have autonomy over their own body and be allowed to make personal choices about what they intake into themselves, I can’t help but find it hypocritical and disturbing that clearly illegal activity is acceptable while clearly legal activity, such as the content we distribute via InRange, is being actively persecuted.

In summary, we are looking for a safe harbor for our legal content and viewers, monetization aside. YouTube has the global dominance over the public narrative and it is unacceptable, in our opinion, for them to threaten livelihoods and legal content regardless of whatever current moral panic is in play.

If I can be of any further assistance, please let me know.

Sincerely,
Karl Kasarda
&
Ian McCollum

In another non-shocker, Reddit apparently just deleted /r Gun Deals today.

I'm beyond pissed.

ETA- It appears that something called H.R. 1865 was passed that was ostensibly to combat sex trafficking on the internet, but can likely make a website criminally liable for something it's users do.

Some other unfortunate victims of the all-reaching banhammer were subs like ScotchSwap, BeerTrade, CigarSwap, BrassSwap, SecretSniper, etc. Anything they felt represented a "marketplace" for prohibited items. Also taken down were a bunch (15 or so) dark web subs, Shoplifting, XanaxNation or something, etc. You get the picture.

I predict the next round will be subs like Firearms, Guns, LongRange, etc. Anything Reddit or their cash flow may find to be offensive or hurting their delicate sensibilities.
