Meh, who wants to go back (my grandparents were the last to have li ed there anyway.) It was their loss.

I just don't see a reason to cut a ton of slack to them when their first move with independence was essentially to start ethnic cleansing.
Maybe they took Woodrow Wilson too seriously.

Nobody likes foreign masters.
The Baltic Germans were more a cultural thing than an ethnic thing. Almost all of them were intermarried with the local population along the line (as one would expect after 700 years). In an case, they did not actually "rule" the Baltics since 1525.

It wasn't complex, the Baltic governments were socialists and wanted to take peoples stuff, so they picked on whatever minorities they thought they could get away with stealing from who had stuff worth stealing. No different from Ida Amin kicking out the Indians and taking their stuff.

Even if you want to buy into the socialist class warfare story - the nobility was a tiny slice of the whole. It was close to 10% of their population that they ran out of the country.

Estonia is too small and too poor to buy/build any kind of defense against the russians that may or maynot invade.

So, does that mean that they shouldn't try to fight back, if it happens? Just roll over, and let the Russians have it?

Nope. Make the bastards pay for every inch with blood. Just know that it is a losing battle and do it anyway.

make them believe the axiom of a rifle behind every blade of grass. If you can take 3-4 of them before you get dead, it was a good death.

As Curtis LeMay pointed out, "If you kill enough of them, they'll stop fighting."

When I was an undergrad, the Kent State University library had a book that advocated "transarming to civilian defense" as an alternative to disarmament. I wish I could remember the title.

Estonias total population is under 1.5 million. In Georgia, when Russian troops came under fire from partisans, they responded with artillery. WHICH IS MY POINT. They should have been buying surplus mortars, artillery pieces, and anti tank weapons. Hell, most of that could have been had at firesale prices, as alot of it has been upgraded fairly recently by the USMil. In other words,Defense in depth, AKA the Swiss model. If there grand strategy is "resist AFTER occupation", they're screwed.

It's really the only cheap way to proof yourself against invasion... though it also would make it harder to surrender to the invader in exchange for beneficial terms...
Dollars for lives, the cheapest way to insure against invasion is have small tactical nukes with the ability to send them anywhere within a 2500 mile circle..........and the balls to use them.

Think I'm bullshitting? Just ask the Israelis. ;)
