your image is wider than 800 pixels - #@$!@$%!#@$%$#

Post by mekender »

For the third time today I found myself trying to embed a image off another website and lo and behold, it is too big.

Seriously, in a world where resolutions are at MINIMUM 1024x768, and can exceed 1650x1080. Am I the only one that thinks this 800 pixel rule is a bit low.

I cant even post the pics off of the NOAA hurricane tracking site because they are 895 pixels wide.

Download Infranview, and use it resize. Works great.

And the reason why the 800 pixel limit(which is fairly common in most forums, btw) is because it breaks tables. Why not just set it up as a link?

Another vote for Irfanview. For basic resizing and cropping, it's great. I use it a lot, including for handling screen captures.

I don't know about this forum, but on the sites I manage, I tend to limit size for uploads too. The main reason for me is speed and size, it slows everything down quite a lot if you have images that might be around 1Mb in size, which is what digital photos usually are. (You can even get images up to 2-3Mb..) One of the easiest ways to get a digital photo down to a manageble size is to limit it to 800 wide, that usually gets it down to around 100kb, give or take, and make sure pages are quick to load for the viewer.

Then it's also an issue of display, you dont want the image to break tables. You can ofcourse set the size in the code, but if you wont show it bigger than max 800, there's really no point in having a much bigger image to start with, it just takes time to load for the viewer.
So there has to be a limit somewhere, and 800 is a decent limit to use.

i was linking pictures from other sites that i didnt feel like having to download and put on my photobucket.

the formatting issues i could understand... the bandwidth, not so much...

i mean hundreds of people drive scooters down the street, but they dont lower the speed limit for those guys...

But I guess the US is retarded when it comes to our general internet access. Most of europe has average speeds a bunch faster than we do.

Heh. Not anything personal here, but you sound like you've been on a big pipe all your life. Some areas of civilization still only offer dialup to their customers. My sister lives in OKC and broadband is only available to her by satellite. One of my buddies finally got some relatively slow (compared to DSL or cable) wireless piped to his house the other day, after having only dialup as an option - and slow dialup at that. For the past twelve or thirteen years.

It's just a matter of being courteous. Personally, I get tired of pages that depend on and hog all my bandwidth just to load - I'm thinking MySpace pages with ninety seven songs on a playlist that have to be loaded and so graphics heavy it sucks a kink in my phone line.

I was hospitalized recently and the only option for me was dialup on AOHell, and I guarantee you I appreciated the light loading pages out there. I didn't even bother checking out some high bandwidth sites because even if I did, they'd time out.

All the hosts of this site are asking is that we use a spoon and not a shovel for our free ice cream.

Heeheehee. I'm ordering FIOS soon - 20mb down/5 up for $65/month including unlimited local and long distance.

Nope, my first modem was a 300 baud cradle modem on an Apple IIe.

I was however one of the first beta testers for roadrunner in the mid 90's and havent looked back since. Frankly i wouldn't live anywhere where i couldn't get at minimum a 5Mbps ISP.

Ive even thought about moving to Texas so that I could sign up for FIOS. 15Mbps sounds really nice.

Sadly, places like Tokyo have 100Mbps connections available for rates on par with normal HSD rates here in the US. Like I said above, we here in the US are retarded when it comes to our internet connections. Actually if you look at the overall infrastructure, we as a country are horrible. Power, water, internet, TV, roads, bridges, rail lines, public transportation. For the most part, they suck.

Chris recently wrote a post on over billing for servers. The same thing is done for phone, internet and power. Having worked for several ISP's I can assure you that if even 20% of their customers tried to use their maximum bandwidth, the entire network would go down.

myspace is one of the worst written and most poorly coded pages on the internet. the only reason i use it is to look up old high school friends. Frankly it is a travesty that the site ever became popular based on how crappy the site truly is.

ok, ill get off my soapbox now... sorry for offending anyone :geek:
