Unknown to most people, there was a population of carnivorous monkeys of the family Hylobatidae who lived in the sewers under San Francisco. They hibernated for most of the year, and then would run amok in the Bay Area on the Winter Solstice, consuming most people who crossed their path. As far as science could tell, this was the only place on Earth where the creatures were able to gorge enough to keep themselves alive during their long hibernation. Why?
