It is with great sadness that I announce the death of Don Haskins this afternoon after a long illness. Details here http://www.kvia.com/global/story.asp?s=8967126

Oh hell.

For those who don't know, Don Haskins is revered in El Paso like Bear Bryant and Red Auerbach in their respective domains. At least he got to see UTEP name a building the Don Haskins Center, and El Paso name a street for him. Too often these things are done posthumously.

For the uninitiated, Glory Road wasn't bad but it took almost 5 years for Texas Western to beat Kentucky. He got the nickname, The Bear, because he used to prowl the sidelines growling at the players and refs. Got to meet hiim once, very briefly at the airport a couple of years ago, he was the perfect gentleman to someone who was in awe of him.
