It seems like I remember reading somewhere the designed top speed is 25 mph or so. It's a far cry from the speeds I had suspected they were shooting for, but I imagine it could still booger you up pretty decently.

IIRC, the Segway uses a group of counter-rotating gyroscopes and some other things to provide it balance and stability, and I do believe their drive system is patented. Great concept thinking, but all he did was morph a Segway into a single-seat motorcycle.
