You guys are all over this , yup their are full of it , the web servers and the wire, earth stations or transceivers that connect them can always use more bandwidth, ( for real time vid conferences etc) but out of band width , shit.

Not really a leap, WDM has been around for years. But the ITU just standardized it a couple of years ago.

What we're seeing as bottlenecks are the servers themselves and the routers and switches used to tie the corporate network together. Servers are easy. Scale them up if you have the money, or scale them out if you have the money and room.

Routers and switches are a bit trickier. I can only imagine what's happening on the web with several orders of magnitude more data than we deal with transiting during the same time frame. There are upper limits to the amount of packets a router can route in a given period of time, and the major routing vendor(s) don't keep up with Moore's law quite as neatly (or cheaply).

I'd love to crawl inside a bigger corps network for a few weeks and learn what they're doing to combat these issues at the corporate level. I'm still having to convince people that hubs are a bad design when VoIP is involved

speaking of porn... every so often L3 and Cogent will get into arguments about bandwidth costs with eachother... eventually one of the two gets pissed off enough to shut the other off... ban 13% of the porn on the net goes down in seconds...

It would sure be nice if someone could get Cox to open up their pipes on their newsgroups. They keep raising their downstream speeds on HTTP, but still have their NNTP throttled down.
