Experts Warn Internet Is Running Out of Bandwidth

Internet users face regular "brownouts" that will freeze their computers as capacity runs out in cyberspace, according to research to be published later this year.
Experts predict that consumer demand, already growing at 60 percent a year, will start to exceed supply as early as 2010 because of more people working online and the soaring popularity of bandwidth-hungry Web sites such as YouTube and services such as the BBC's iPlayer.

I remember a few years ago some guy was working on a method to carry the web over power lines. It supposedly had huge capacity. I wonder what ever came of it?

Hmm, considering all the "dark" cable that's been sitting idle since the tech bubble burst, and only recently has started seeing any kind of use(Google been buying up alot of it)...
Even if it were true about "running out", it would simply mean laying down more fiber..

Well, you have to consider WHY someone would float such a story and who's behind it. Perhaps someone's looking to setup those who don't know any better (read government offals) to try and get some grant money that everyone else seems to be getting thrown their way - perhaps they need to fund a STUDY and it'll cost a few $$$MILLION$$$????

more than likely it was some group that wants either international control if ICANN or wants a net neutrality law passed... one side would be bad, the other COULD be good...

It interferes massively with radio signals.
Think about it. Taking the power of those lines, modulating them at extremely high frequency, with antenna hundreds of miles long...
That and the economics of it weren't near what the advocates were touting, especially when you started adding in mitigation for RFI (IF you could do it sufficiently)
...even before I read MHI, my response to seeing a poster for the stars of the latest Twilight movies was "I see 2 targets and a collaborator".

That's one way to fix it. But with the way Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexers (DWDM) have been progressing recently, you can now squeeze a couple extra orders of magnitude worth of bandwidth out of the same strand of single mode compared to just a couple of years ago.
