Deep Water Kits for civvie vehicles

Post by Cybrludite »

Anyone have recommendations for where to get a deep water exhaust for a GMC Sierra? Between working at a hospital, being on the hospital's hazmat/chemical weapon decontamination team, and being a CERT volunteer, being able to get past waist-deep water (still water, that is. &$#@ that noise if it's moving... ) seems a good thing.

Virtually all the kits I've seen have been for Hummers, Jeeps or Landrover Defenders. Your best bet is to make your own snorkel kit.

I bought my Defender from a guy who had seriously tricked it out for offroading - he regularly drove it through deep water. There was a high tide line of dried mud on the dashboard as proof.

The thing is, it doesn't have an extended exhaust, just a snorkel. Thinking about it, I can't remember seeing an extended exhaust on any off roaders here. Are you sure you need one ?

Been talking to the 4x4 geek here in the office, and it looks like I just need the extended exhaust pipe. Air intake is high enough as is.

Spent the summer of '78 fording rivers in Bolivia with my missionary older brother in his '63 Landcruiser P/U. Lessons recalled from dusty archives of fading grey matter:
  • *Maintaining the "goldilocks" speed to keep engine in low spot behind the bow wave is the trick
*Have a plan for disabling fan for especially deep water when bow wave won't be enough
*Extended exhaust not essential but may have noticeable power loss from backpressure underwater.
*Extended exhaust lowers risk if the worst happens and you stall in deep water.

My personal crossing record = 14 in 1 hour on theroad back in to Monteagudo on our way to Camiri. The road was straight. The river wasn't. The brakes failed and it wasn't a synchro trannie. Had to keep moving. Roads were closed the next day for elections (Banzar won). Interesting afternoon...
