E Reader

Post by Finn »

Hey gang, I was thinking of purchasing an e-reader for myself in the near future. I was looking at the Sony PRS-505, the Amazon Kindle, or the iRex iLiad. Does anyone own any of these products? What do you think of them? If anyone else has looked into these, I would love to hear your thoughts.

I am liking the iLiad because to seems to support open formats (pdf, html, txt, and so on), but it is expensive.

The Kindle seems really nice as I can download books straight to it from Amazon, but I do not like that if I have an ebook that is not the right format, I have to send them a copy to convert. The Kindle is also nice that it has the wireless network for downloads and browsing wikipedia (but then I know of a way to download all of wikipedia and sticking it into memory, so technically I can browse wikipedia with any of them).

The Sony is looking really nice, but from what I have seen, PDF support is somewhat lacking. It seems to be able to support most open formats, and is not as expensive as the iLiad, and is not nearly as bulky as the Kindle.

I'd appreciate any input on this, thank you.

If you want something cheap, go buy a palm - ideally one that's being discontinued. You should be able to get one for under a hundred bucks.

If your willing to spend the money on the likes of the Sony, Kindle, etc, I'd skip that, and go buy an Asus Eee - a decent little nanonotebook that does far more that display E-books.

Hmm, is there an Apple version of Foxit?

If you're looking for a cheap handheld or pocket PC, you can find used Dell Axims on Ebay for around $150. They can take both SD and CF memory cards. Friend of mine uses his on his sub station and takes all his ebooks with him.
