The Gun Counter

I worked for C&NW for a short time, in 1991, and we always had FRNs hanging around the yard during daylight hours. One afternoon, working the 05 job (4 PM til midnight) doing yard switching, we had a bunch of FRNs with video cameras show up, so the job foreman decided to give them a thrill. We did the whole switching job, 63 cars in all, using only hand signals, no radio.

Geez! You'd have thought they'd all died and gone to heaven! When they secured operations due to fading light, a couple of them came over and asked us to autograph their tape cases.

Railroad nuts are a totally different breed!

I have a friend who's a railroad nut so I got pictures of a lot of rolling stock at the Snoqualmie railroad museum. Most of it was just rusting away.

I spent a lot of time when I was a little chap playing on this one back home.

I can vaguely remember playing around this one when I was little, before my parents moved back to Alaska.

So the train in that video left out of Spencer, NC where they have a pretty good size train museum and restoration yard... Full on working turntable and everything. It is a hoot to take the kids to and [strike]free[/strike]cheap to go.

Sweet. I know diesel is more efficient and all, but there's no beating steam for pure romance.

I spent two great summers working at Cedar Point and living on the premises. Good times.
