Barebone Kits

Post by Alcibiades »

Anyone know a good online source for barebone kits? It's been a while since I've built a new computer system, and most search engines are rather spammy, so I figured I'd ask here.

I've tried Newegg, but they seem to only stock Shuttle and Asus.

Sorrry, I'm on the other side of the big pond, so no specific store recommendations. However, I wouldn't turn my nose up at Asus kits. When I can't get genuine Intel motherboards (because they don't sell as retail items in Europe) I buy Asus. Put an Asus MB plus some Kingston memory in an Antec case, and you're already way ahead of the name-brand boxes, quality-wise.

Denis is right. There isn't much that's available to home builders that isn't superior in quality to the likes of HP, Dell, Compaq, (insert all other names I have forgotten here).

New egg has decent deals, Tiger direct is another good source, as is CDW.

For power bargain hunting try this site.

my thoughts exactly...

why not do this... post a thread with your budget and what you want the computer for and we will give you a good breakdown

Why go through all the sweat & swearing? Fry's sells basic boxes with respectable numbers for $200-300?

Don't forget their nonpayment of rebates.

Wow. I never knew. I've bought quite a bit from Tiger, but I do steer clear of mail in rebate items as an s.o.p.

They did neglect to ship me a 1 gig stick or RAM once, but after a quick call to them, it showed up about 2 days later.
