Web Design Question

Post by rightisright »

I have a business website that is a bit dated and needs an upgrade. It was designed in 2001 when many people in my area didn't have broadband. By design, the site is very heavy on pictures. So, when it was designed it was made to load quickly on 56K.

I plan on having the site redone this winter. But I have to rescan the old non-digtal pics and edit the newer digital ones. I would safely estimate 95% of my target clientele now has broadband.

So, my question is what resolution and size should I be shooting for?

800 X 600 is a pretty safe size right now.
On filesize, just use a medium JPG compression and let the file size be what it works out to be.

Be careful you don't lose too much picture quality for the file size.

there are a couple of really good java applets that will let you embed pictures.. they are pretty easy to implement too... i wouldnt put 800x600 pics on a page unless they are in thumbnail form.

let me know if you need more info

The pics are of construction work my company has completed.

Right now, the pics are ~450px square. They are compressed down to ~70 KB. So if someone wants to blow one up to look at details, they pretty much get a blob.

well you can make them huge but if you dont use some way to account for thumbnails, you will have a huge server load too...

check out this site

they are really easy to implement and play around with and it looks damn good too... also there is a company called Coffee Cup Software that makes a program that works really well

i love this program because it is so easy to use.

One thing you might consider is upgrading the size of your pictures slightly, and making some or all of them link to high resolution versions, for people that want the additional details.
