Black Roof/White Roof

You want a white roof. Period.

Black does not only absorb heat, it radiates heat just as well. This is why arctic parkas are white. As are space vehicles.

I live in a townhouse, one unit in a five-unit building. The roof is dark brown, the siding is beige, and the trim grey-brown. Other units the same or grey with white trim.

A white roof would look terrible on our building. Yes, it matters; I don't need to lose even more value. I already added reflecting insulation in the attic of my unit (mylar-bubble sheet stapled to the rafters, which also acts as 'ducting' to channel heat up and out the ridge vents). That helped measurably.

Hmm, I wonder what they would make of all the current high end roofing systems with long lifespans..

Copper.
Concrete Tile.
Synthetic slate.
