Hubris strikes...

Post by Joe ex PNG »

...me right in the rear today. If memory serves me right, about one month ago I was talking to a few friends about the proper technique for driving through large, deep puddles of water. Foolishly I mentioned how I knew a couple of ladies who did it wrong, and were flooded out...

Heh- here comes Nemesis...

Well, wouldn't you know with all of Fay's flooding, I would just have to encounter a patch of road closer to a lake in depth than a puddle, And foolishly, the line of cars turning around did not deter me from pressing on. Nor did the stalled caddy- in fact, I beleive I thought I was going to show that driver the exact way one would drive on a flooded road...

Kind of seems right that I stalled my car right next to that one.

Anyway, I was able to call up a friend with a proper 4x4 to tow me to my garage, where I spent the past 3 hours pulling bits off of my engine to vaccuum out the water. And, I learned a lesson- don't be an arrogant jerk (wonder how long that will last?).

Ok, got the intake, plugs, and valve cover pulled off. Vaccuumed out about a quart of water from the cylinders, and I'm going to let it sit over the weekend before changing the oil and filter, then doing a compression test.

Not the prettiest car in the world, nor the most glamourous, but hey- 32mpg! It's paid for, and worth saving.

Just to the floor of the car, thank goodness. However, the water was high enough to hit the air intake, which then sucked it up like a shop vac. Heck, my radio and A/C were still working even after the motor died- kind of embarassing as Deep Purple's Highway Star happend to be playing at that moment.

At least you didn't experience Smoke on the Water!

Glad I don't have to worry about my air intake or battery until the water gets up past my door handles. I may have to look into getting a deep water exaust kit, though.

Well, it's bad- 2 broken piston rods. I'll be pulling the head later today to see if it's worth rebuilding.
