Yeah I had just been thinking how glad I was that I got all of my dental work done last month, and that I wasn't getting that done this morning.

Mrs. NPR was driving to school with the kids on board when it hit, she said her Jeep went all over the place on the ice.

Well, it's been a few days. How are things shaking out in town?

I'd heard early on that a lot of windows were out around town. I'm thinking that means a lot of cold people and a lot of demand for glass and plywood.

How's traffic? Are the roads navigable?

In town the roads are being fixed pretty rapidly. The ramps at International and Minnesota are repaired; they finished repaving yesterday and they were open again this morning. The Glenn highway is still fucked... The new eagle river bridge is damaged and down to 2 lanes, which sucks badly. Most things are running normally. I don't think they are yet allowing semi trucks over the Glenn, and the railroad is impassible also, so they need to get one of them fixed before Fairbanks starts running out of things.

Schools are closed until Monday.... Eagle River Elementary is not going to reopen this year, sounds like it is effectively destroyed and it is considered too dangerous to enter. I guess the teachers there are being told that if they had stuff in their classrooms, that stuff is gone because they are not going to be allowed to enter to recover it. All the teachers and students from that school are going to be relocated to other schools for the remainder of the year.

I guess there are some houses that have been found to not be habitable, but I don't know how common that is. Most of the people I know, their houses came through it fine. Most of the damaged houses I think are out in Eagle River.

Had some time to kill in Eagle River the last couple days... Things got fucked up pretty bad out there. Drove past a pawn shop that is closed with the whole front wall shored up with diagonal braces. Plywood over windows all over the place, ceiling panels missing all over inside buildings. Was in Alaska Industrial Hardware out there and they are missing lots of ceiling tiles, and they have big cracks running throughout their concrete and tile floor from one side of the building to the other. Some of which are big enough that they put out cones at the worst spots.
