Associate Editor, Shooting Illustrated
SUMMARY
Provides editorial support essential to the production of SHOOTING ILLUSTRATED magazine and ShootingIllustrated.com website in an accurate and punctual manner according to established standards and policies.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Responsible for preparation and production of monthly editorial departments and features as assigned, including reviewing manuscripts, copy-editing, assembling photo packages, writing captions and headlines, and proofreading.
2. Proofreads all copy for departments and feature articles during all stages of editorial production. Keys edit proof corrections on Art Department editorial workstations. Prepares files for editorial page make-up.
3. Assists with the production of copy and photographs for the ShootingIllustrated.com website. Coordinates with Editor-in-Chief and Managing Editor in developing content and assigning articles to contributors for posting on website. Reviews, fact-checks, copy-edits and proofreads articles during all stages of production. Coordinates with Photography Department in producing videos and image galleries for posting on the website. Directs traffic to ShootingIllustrated.com by efficient use of Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites. Posts new articles and photographs on ShootingIllustrated.com as assigned.
4. Searches for photographs to be used in features and writes captions.
5. Produces assigned staff-generated departments.
6. Reviews, edits and prepares feature articles.
7. Writes bylined and non-bylined articles for departments and feature articles as assigned. Produces photographs on assignment when required.
8. Coordinates with design staff in accomplishing daily work requirements and meeting monthly production deadlines.
10. Tests and reviews firearms and accessories as assigned.
11. Communicates by mail, email and telephone with subscribers, NRA members, writers, and representatives of the shooting and hunting industry.
12. Travels as assigned.
13. Extended hours as required.
15. Other duties as assigned.
SCOPE
Coordinates with editorial and design staffs of SHOOTING ILLUSTRATED and ShootingIllustrated.com; also coordinates with other departments in the Publications Division and other NRA divisions. Frequent contact with firearm and self-defense/tactical companies, firearm schools and instructors, government agencies, subscribers and NRA members.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor of Arts degree in English or Journalism or relevant work experience. Two to three years experience on a newspaper or magazine editorial staff. Experience with shooting publication desired. Working knowledge of shooting and hunting industry necessary.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
Ability to write original material and to edit and rewrite material generated by others. Excellent grammar, spelling and punctuation skills. Ability to write clearly and concisely; organize and prioritize; work under pressure and meet deadlines; carry several projects through to completion simultaneously. Ability to proofread effectively. Ability to work with minimum supervision. Good interpersonal skills. Must have basic photographic skills and familiarity with magazine design and production. Working knowledge of electronic publishing and related software necessary. Working knowledge of website content management systems, search engine optimization practices and social media.
