He killed it Sat, July 16, early in the morning at Rancho del Termite. Estimated weight is between 350-400 lbs. It was a "bar", a castrated boar, so was edible. It was boned out and turned into a large quantity of pan(patty) sausage.
Grandpa Termite is highly pleased to have one of his problems eliminated. Unfortunately, recent trail-cam photos show there are 2 large boars and a sow with piglets still about.

Looks like it is time to launch USS GunCounter on a search and destroy mission. Dead Hogs R good hogs.

What's he got there, a .30-06?

Remington 700 ADL. 270 Win. Grandpa's rifle.308Mike wrote:What's he got there, a .30-06?
If he was using the ammo I sighted it in with, the load was Federal Premium 150 gr Sierra boattails.

Nice! Did he tell you what were the conditions of the shot, and did it drop immediately? A 150 gr .270 is a decently stout bullet, and obviously more than adequate for a hog that size.Termite wrote:Remington 700 ADL. 270 Win. Grandpa's rifle.308Mike wrote:What's he got there, a .30-06?

I talked to him tonight. Hog was facing left to right. First shot hit the hog very high behind the shoulder, and cracked the spine. Hog dropped, then got up on its front legs and started scuttling away. He then put another bullet in it centered just behind the shoulder, and the hog stopped and fell, but was not dead. He walked up to it and shot it in the back of the head with a .22 pistol to finish it.
Rifle ammo WAS NOT the ammo that the rifle was sighted in with. He was shooting Winchester 130 gr Silvertips instead. The second bullet did not hit a shoulder, ribs only, and did not exit. He found it when they dressed the hog. Jacket and core had separated.
While the bullets did the job, I'm not really happy. Silvertips are great deer bullets, and good for most average hogs. But this was a 350-400 lb animal. Had the first shot centered directly on the shoulder, it may not have penetrated completely to the vitals, and there would have been a big injured angry hog to deal with.
Midway is running a special on blemished 270 cal 150gr bonded bullets, $24/100, thru the end of the month. I think I'm going to buy a couple of boxes, work up a good load, load up 150 or so and zero the gun, take the cartridges to Grandpa Termite, and confiscate all other brands/loads.
A 150 gr bonded .270 bullet should hold together and penetrate nicely.

Great information! Was this a long shot (long enough to bleed much energy?), and perhaps why the bullets didn't work as well as expected - besides the fact it was a 400 lbs hog he was shooting!
Personally, for a hog that big, I'd want something a little heavier and .30 or larger, but he got the job done with what he had. I hope he's also carrying a damn big (and scary sharp) knife with him while hunting hogs.
I'm with Rumpshot - we need to have a Texas hug hunt (search & destroy mission) for GunCounter members!

I haven't had the chance to sight it in yet, but I could loan y'all my Ruger in .358 Winchester if that .270 isn't doing the job.
