Thanks all for the welcome and advice. I will go out this weekend and give the 4" a try before buying. I still think I will go with the .45 though. The next purchase after the .45 will be an XD 9mm for the wife. One other question...what type of ammo should I be on the lookout for as far as practice goes? And who generally has the best prices? Also has anyone gone to FrontSite for training? I live in Las Vegas so it seems like a good place to go since it is close.

Just wanted to say I really like the guncounter site. I have been a lurker on Kim's site and forums for a couple of years and I am glad I found another place that I like.

Pratice ammo? In a word...cheap. Defense ammo is another story. My XDs haven't choked on anything I've fed them. I personally like Magtech for pratice ammo. Keep your eye open for spare mags...while you still can and pick up as many as you can afford.

Walmart dropped their price on 9mm and .45ACP Blazer Brass last week. I've seen reports of $8.57 for 9mm and $13.99 for .45ACP, but my local was rather sold out when I stopped by. I've had good luck with both, though its not the best brass for reloading (ok, but not great), and the .45 is a little hard to use in a full moon clip for a revolver.

You may be able to pick up some cheaper mail order if you shop around, especially if you're willing to shoot import ammo (Russian Wolf/Barnaul, S&B, Fiocchi, etc; the latter two are quite good).
